Over the years I’ve known believers who are what I call experience chasers. They go from church to church, looking for the next place that might give them a special kind of heightened spiritual experience. They go to hear about unusual encounters with God, hoping to take their own lives in a new direction. They go as far as they can afford to travel, to hear a Christian celebrity tell them something new and inspiring. This kind of experience-seeking can be a trap for us. Why? It can take our eyes off Jesus! And that reminds me of today's passage, so let's listen to it:

Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God. (Col. 2:18-19)

The church we attend has a motto: “It's all about Jesus.” I like that, don't you? We have that motto so that people in our community will know our true focus. We aren't focused on successful programs. We aren't focused on getting bigger—although we’re growing. We aren't focused on big events, although we have them very occasionally. All of those things might have their purpose but they can only be secondary to our focus on Jesus Christ. The motto isn't just a reminder for the community, however, it's also for us. We know that we can get sidetracked and miss the point. In today's passage, the apostle Paul reminds us that celebrities in the Christian world can lead us off track by drawing us to their special experiences and away from the centrality of Christ. Jesus is the Head and it's Jesus’ life blood that makes His church grow. He’s the white-hot Center of everything.

Today and every day, it's all about Jesus...and that is very Good News!
