Sacrifice is an important theme in the Bible that shows up in both the Old and New Testaments. The Old Testament books of Exodus and Leviticus provide very detailed instructions for sacrifices in Israel but examples of sacrifice are not limited to the Old Testament. The New Testament emphasizes the saving importance of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. Understanding sacrifice helps us to connect with God and others and to live in obedience, service, and love. This week we'll explore the theme of sacrifice, so lets begin by listening to a passage from the Psalms:
To You I shall offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and call upon the name of the Lord. (Psa. 116:17)
The "sacrifice of thanksgiving" in today's passage refers to an offering made to honor and thank God for His blessings and provision. In the Old Testament, it was a specific offering, often involving animal sacrifices or bread and cakes that were used to express their gratitude for God's mercy and help. We see this mirrored in the New Testament, where believers are encouraged to give thanks in all circumstances, expressing appreciation for God's goodness (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Both Old and New Testaments emphasize the importance of thankfulness in our worship and daily life, highlighting that true thanksgiving is a genuine expression of appreciation for what God provides, no matter what our circumstances may be. When you and I give thanks, especially during difficult circumstances, we demonstrate to our Heavenly Father that we are devoted to Him and not devoted to particular outcomes. Offer God the sacrifice of thanksgiving today. He likes it when we offer Him the sacrifice of thanksgiving...and that is very Good News!
“Nothing is more vital than prayer in Christian existence, and few things are more vulnerable to neglect.”
