This week we have been considering the biblical concept of sacrifices. God instituted sacrifices in the Old Testament because the Hebrews, like us, were sinners and separated from Him. As mentioned last time, the Hebrews sacrificed by burning cakes or the meat of animals and birds. Those Old Testament sacrifices were imperfect, but they were a type for the real and perfect sacrifice that would come later. But today, let's think about another kind of sacrifice as we listen to another passage from Hebrews:
And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased. (Heb. 13:16)
On Monday and Wednesday we looked at the sacrifice of thanksgiving and the sacrifice of praise. In today's passage we read about another kind of sacrifice; the sacrifice of good works. Have you ever wanted to do one thing, but knew that God wanted you to do something else? Sometimes I might want to read a book, but then I find out that my neighbor needs my help. Will I do what I want or will I do what God wants me to do? If I'm a really being thoughtful, I immediately stop and help my neighbor, despite the fact that I really would rather read my book. When I do good to please God rather than to please myself, that’s a sacrifice. Hebrews 13:16 closes with this encouraging reminder: "with such sacrifices God is well pleased." Do you want to please God? Do something good for someone else today. God likes your sacrifices of good works and sharing...and that is very Good News!
“Nothing is more vital than prayer in Christian existence, and few things are more vulnerable to neglect.”
