Episode 479: Taste and see

My wife Pam and I set aside a time each evening for prayer. We don't make a big deal about it; before we go to bed at night we pray together for folks we know and folks who are sick that we have been asked to pray for. We also pray for those going through a difficult time, or sometimes, for situations that happened that day. It’s been a marvelous experience to see how God answers those prayers. But sometimes when I pray, God begins to suggest something to me that He wants me to do, and I…resist Him. Does that ever happen to you? Today, let's consider a passage in light of these promptings:

O taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him. (Psa. 34:8-9)

When I was a new Christian, many of my friends were a bit impulsive; I certainly was. I would sense God saying something to me and I would be willing to change anything, to take any risk to do what He asked. Now that I’m more "mature," I’m more…careful. I’d like to think it’s because I’ve learned a lot since my youthful days. But I think it’s really because I have a lot more to lose! We build up walls of comfort around ourselves and we don’t want our comfort to be disturbed. I like today’s passage. It's so like God to say it this way! “O taste and see that I, the Lord, am good.” God is gently encouraging us to move forward, to take a few baby steps. "Just try it. Just a little a taste and you’ll see!" Today, let me ask you this question: What difficult obedience has God called you to in the past? What difficult obedience is God calling you to now? Is there some area in which you sense God has been calling you to move in a different direction? It may not be some huge, life-changing issue; it may just be one area of personal change. Maybe it has to do with the way you use your finances. Maybe it has to do with the way you are using your time. Whatever it is, agree with God to take a step toward it. Give it a try. Taste and see. God really is good and that is very Good News!
