This week we have been considering God’s calling in our lives as a high call and a heavenly call. This might all seem a little distant or abstract, but it really does have a very present application for each of us. Today, let’s finish this series as we look at how God’s call played out for a young man who was just minding his own business when God came along, spoke to him, and changed the direction of his life:

The Lord gave me this message: “I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” “O Sovereign Lord,” I said, “I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!” The Lord replied, “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you.  And don’t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and will protect you… Today I appoint you to stand up against nations and kingdoms. Some you must uproot and tear down, destroy and overthrow. Others you must build up and plant… Get up and prepare for action… You will stand against the whole land—the kings, officials, priests, and people of Judah. They will fight you, but they will fail. For I am with you, and I will take care of you. I, the Lord, have spoken!” (Jer. 1:5-19 selected verses)

Wow! To Jeremiah, nothing felt good about this call! Listen to his response: “O Sovereign Lord, I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!” God knew his reluctance wasn’t based on humility; it was based on fear and so He responded: “Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. And don’t be afraid of the people.” Then God gave him his mission: “Today I appoint you to stand up against nations and kingdoms. Some you must uproot and tear down, destroy and overthrow. Others you must build up and plant… You will stand against the whole land—They will fight you, but they will fail.” Jeremiah didn’t choose his mission—God chose Jeremiah. God’s call is not based upon your or my convenience or our talent. Jeremiah knew he wasn't equipped to confront nations and kingdoms, priests and entire populations. He didn’t know how to uproot and tear down or how to build up and plant. And yet, God catapulted him into this dangerous, world-changing mission and promised him two things: first, everyone would be against him. Second, God would be with him and for him. Today, God is calling you and me, too. How will we respond to His call? No matter who or what is against you, God will be with you and for you...and that is very Good News!
